My diesel has black oil after an oil change.
One of the most common questions we hear from diesel owners is: “My engine gets black oil again quickly after I do an oil change — why is it doing this, and is it normal?” It’s very common, and while a lot of our customers believed it was normal, they soon changed their minds after using our Flushing Oil Concentrate.
Short answer: oil that goes black quickly after a change isn’t normal — it means the engine is still full of soot and sludge that the fresh oil immediately picks up. Flush the engine clean first, and the new oil stays clean far longer.
So What Does Black Oil Mean?
Engine oil has five key duties, and one of them is to keep the engine clean. If your diesel oil goes black quickly after an oil change, then quite clearly the engine isn’t clean — it’s likely contaminated with soot and sludgy deposits. This can even happen on low-mileage vehicles. Many customers religiously change their oil strictly on schedule and wonder why it still goes dirty straight away. There are too many possible reasons to detail here, so the best approach is to keep a close check on your “oil soot level”.

Flushing Oil Concentrate safely removes all built-up engine sludge and old oil from your engine.
As simple as completing an oil change.
How to Test Your Oil Soot Level
It only takes a few seconds to check how much soot is in your oil:
Step 1 — Get some oil on your fingers
Pull the dipstick and wipe some oil onto your fingers.
Step 2 — Rub it in
Rub the oil between your finger and thumb.
Step 3 — Check your skin
Wipe the oil off with a rag and examine your skin. It should be perfectly clean — if it leaves a dark stain, the oil is high in soot and can’t keep the engine clean.
Always change your oil before it’s capable of staining your skin — and always change it hot.
The finger test is a great quick check, but if you want a precise picture of what’s happening inside your engine, an SOS3 Oil Sample Kit sends a sample off for proper laboratory analysis — measuring soot, wear metals and contamination so you can track your engine’s health over time.
To get your dirty diesel nice and clean again, simply use Flushing Oil Concentrate. For more on this, see our guides on whether clean diesel oil is achievable and why you should flush a diesel engine (including the 6-step process).
