Fix low compression on a Toyota engine
At CEM, one of the most common things we get asked about is stuck rings — and how to fix low compression on an engine. So when we saw this old 1997 Toyota Corolla on its way to the wreckers, we thought it could be an easy save!
Short answer: low compression is often caused by carbon-stuck piston rings, not worn-out metal. Flushing Oil Concentrate dissolves the baked-on carbon so the rings seal again — on this neglected Corolla it restored full compression in about 40 minutes, no rebuild required.
This Toyota Corolla had 207,000km on the clock and had received absolutely no servicing for the last 4 years. The first step was to establish a baseline with a compression test — and yes, as the video shows, it revealed low compression and two weak cylinders. It was dead easy to use Flushing Oil Concentrate to restore full compression to the weak cylinders, and 40 minutes later we’d taken the measurement to confirm it.
Flushing Oil Concentrate will safely remove all built up engine sludge and old oil from your engine. As simple as completing an oil change.
Some engine flushes simply aren’t capable of dissolving hard, baked-on carbon — but Flushing Oil Concentrate (made by Cost Effective Maintenance) is designed to do exactly that. Safely, simply and quickly.
3 Easy Steps to Fix Low Compression on a Toyota Engine
- Add Flushing Oil Concentrate at 12.5mL per litre of oil capacity to clean oil.
- Park the vehicle up and run it at a high idle for 30–45 minutes.
- Drop the oil and replace it with new oil.
Job done! The rings are now clean, compression is up, and power is up. In addition:
- The idle speed increased by 300rpm, so it had to be re-set.
- The engine is much quieter and smoother.
- It revs out more freely.
- The small amount of exhaust smoke has disappeared.
- It starts faster.
- The hesitation when pulling off idle has disappeared.
So whether you’ve got a petrol or diesel engine, if it’s got a bit of age on it, chances are it’ll be down on compression and power. The reason is simple: carbon build-up around the piston rings. Clean up the carbon and the rings seal better — and that means more compression and more power.
In this case, you could have spent a lot of money unnecessarily on an engine rebuild to achieve the same result. Instead, as you can see, we quickly and easily achieved a significant level of rejuvenation with very little effort or cash. We’re now confident that whoever buys it will have a good little car with plenty of life left in it.
