When to change a Provent filter
Provent 200 catch cans do a remarkable job of filtering oily crankcase fumes before they enter the inlet area. One of the common mistakes people make is not replacing the filter — or not knowing when to change a Provent filter.
Depending on the age and condition of the engine, the Provent filter will be good for anywhere from 20,000km to 40,000km. Yes, that’s a big window — but once you replace the first filter, the ongoing filters will usually last a lot longer.
Short answer: change your Provent 200 filter every 20,000–40,000km — but inspect it once it passes 20,000km, and replace it sooner if oily residue starts coating the outside of the can.
Maintaining a Provent 200 Catch Can
- Check it has been installed correctly, with no kinks or poorly fitting clamps.
- Regularly remove accumulated oil via the drain valve and attached hose. We recommend doing this every 5,000km. If it isn’t done, the Provent can fill with waste oil, which stops it filtering correctly.
- In the cooler months you may find some water condensation in the filter. This is nothing to be alarmed about.
- The filter can be dripping with oil — this is perfectly normal and does not mean it needs replacing.
When Does the Provent Filter Need Changing?
There’s no specific time frame listed for when to change a Provent filter. Usually, once the filter has reached around 20,000km, it’s time to make a closer inspection.
Step 1: Empty the drain every 5,000km, or as required. (The catch can should never fill with oil!)
Step 2: Check how many kilometres it has been since the filter element was last changed. If it’s been over 40,000km, the filter will need changing.
Step 3: Inspect the outside of the catch can. If it’s covered in oily residue, that’s a tell-tale sign the filter needs replacing.
When the filter is unable to work correctly, oily residue releases from the pressure valve in the can lid and begins coating the outside of the can. This residue is easily noticed — and when you see it, it’s time to replace the filter.
